Weekly Q&A: Negative evidence

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, September 13, 2005

This week, a reader asks for advice on including negative evidence in their documentation. Read the response below from our advisor, Barbara Wadsworth, RN, MSN, MBA, CNAA,BC, administrative nurse director at Abington (PA) Memorial Hospital.

Q: Should organizations avoid using "negative" evidence in the written documentation?

A: As long as an organization shows how a negative situation yielded a positive outcome, don't discard this as damaging evidence. Show how a negative event or circumstance prompted a favorable result, such as process or policy change. This is an excellent way to demonstrate progress or growth in an area that had room for improvement.
