Missouri African-Americans are 35% more likely to die from stroke, heart disease and cancer than whites, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

To improve the quality of medical care given to African-Americans and Hispanic Missourians, a new initiative is being launched by Primaris, a non-profit healthcare consulting firm that serves as the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for Missouri. The intensive training program will increase physicians' understanding of how race and ethnic background affects healthcare quality. The educational sessions will be offered at no charge to participants. Educators will apply a nationally-tested program developed by the federal Office of Minority Health.

The project will be limited to approximately 60 physician practice sites across Missouri. Physicians may apply to participate in the free initiative by contacting Primaris at (800) 735-6776.
