Weekly Q&A: Examples of evidence under Force of Magnetism #1

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 30, 2005

This week, a reader asks for examples of sources of evidence (SOE) to comply with Force of Magnetism #1: Quality of Nursing Leadership. Read the response below from our advisor, Barbara L. O'Brien, RN, MSN, Cert., president, Magnetic HealthCare Strategies, LLC, in Manchester, NJ.

Q: Can you explain the second SOE under Force of Magnetism #1: Quality of Nursing Leadership, and give some examples of compliance?

A: This first Force is the framework that supports professional nursing practice. The second SOE requires organizations to describe how the CNO includes RNs who work in areas other than nursing services in activities and decision-making regarding nursing care, according to the ANCC's 2005 Magnet Recognition Program® Application Manual. The CNO is responsible for all nursing policies and procedures and dictates nursing and patient-care practices regardless of reporting structures within an organization. In large organizations, the CNO may frequently have to organize patient care without line authority. Although this is challenging, "silo"-based approaches, in which nurses practice independently of other disciplines, do not work. Instead, CNOs should build and maintain interdisciplinary partnerships and relationships. Here are a few ideas to meet this requirement:

  • Nursing standards, policies, and procedures are approved by a body of nurses from all areas
  • Staffing grids for all patient care units are approved by the CNO to ensure that the proper mix of staff is accomplished
  • Patient plans of care are seamless across the continuum
