Don't lose sight of the message

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 30, 2005

Strive for an environment of excellence, not recognition, says Beverly Hancock, MS, RN, education and quality coordinator, and ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® project coordinator at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. "Designation recognizes environments that benefit the nursing staff. Organizations need to be careful to make structural or process changes because they are good for the nurses, not just to get designation," she says. Hancock warns that "if structures, such as shared governance, are put in place to 'get designation,' or if staff perceive that they are created for that purpose, they may feel that the organization is more concerned about the award than about them."
