CT hospital earns redesignation, enjoys low turnover

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 30, 2005

Connecticut's first ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®-designated hospital, Middlesex Hospital, recently earned redesignation. According to hospital leadership and staff, a collaborative and supportive atmosphere contributes to their recent achievement and to the hospital's ability to retain top-quality nurses. Middlesex has lower turnover rates than the national average and lower vacancy rates than the state's average, according to officials. Examples of programs that entice staff to establish longevity in their careers at Middlesex include a tuition compensation program and an on-site computer classes, paid for by hospital administration, to encourage RNs to complete a bachelor's degree. Middlesex also offers a tiered pay scale. RNs receive a pay raise of several dollars for attending meetings, conferences, and pursuing certification throughout the year.
