Weekly Q&A: Written narratives

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 16, 2005

This week, a reader seeks advice on writing the application narratives. Read the response below from our advisor, Suzanne C. Beyea, RN, PhD, FAAN, director of nursing research, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH.

Q: Can you give any guidance on how long each written narrative should be? Does the ANCC require a certain length?

A: Write narratives that are long enough to completely respond to the specified criteria and make them clear and comprehensible to the reviewer. In your narratives, add specific details to provide a thorough explanation but avoid being so detailed that the reader loses interest. All narratives should be well-written--use headings to help organize and present the information. The ANCC does not require a specific length or format and each organization may find that the length of response depends on their specific organization's structure, processes, and activities.
