National survey probes characteristics of hospital leadership
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 16, 2005
Results of a recent hospital leadership survey indicate that the nation's high-performing hospitals develop leadership from within their organizations, and that a CNO serves on the top leadership teams at almost every hospital surveyed. Cejka Search and Solucient® conducted the "2005 hospital CEO leadership survey" to identify CEO characteristics, leadership team composition, organizational performance, future strategic plans, and also contrast findings between those they defined as "best of breed" and "median" performers. More than 100 hospital CEOs participated in the survey, and were categorized in two groups: "best of breed" were those with at least three Solucient 100 Top Hospitals® awards in the last five years, and "median" were those that didn't receive a 100 Top Hospitals award in the last five years, but scored in the third quintile. Other findings show that more "best of breed" hospitals adopt nursing strategies such as ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® status, shared governance, and pay for performance, compared to the "median" participants. According to Solucient officials, the survey represents the first formal step toward evidence-based management research, and the findings will help hospital boards produce high-performing teams.
