A July 2005 survey of older adults showed that 60% reported taking five or more medications at a time, and 16% reported taking 10 or more medications. Approximately 20% of these older individuals reported that they restricted the use of their medications because of the prohibitive cost of these drugs.
In response to these financial concerns and others, Congress passed legislation to establish Medicare Part D to help meet the individual needs of elderly patients on medications. A tip sheet created by the Coalition of Geriatric Nursing Organizations can help healthcare trainers and nurses guide older adults in making informed decisions about what plans within Part D are available in their area and which of the plans will cover more of their medications.
