Healthcare fraud in the U.S. costs $90 billion a year. To reduce costs and increase the quality of healthcare services, Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) companies have developed anti-fraud training programs. BCBS' "Fraud and Abuse Awareness Training" program uses realistic case studies to educate staff on recognizing and responding to signs of healthcare fraud. The Web-based module reduces training time because it replaces the need for annual, face-to-face training. Ninety-two percent of BCBS employees who trained on the system said the format was an effective, easy to use method to increase their knowledge of fraud.
