Tips for handling hostile learners

Sometimes trainers have to deal with angry or violent learners. If an incident does occur, practice the following measures when dealing with violent learners:

  • Ask them to sit down
  • Never allow an angry person to block the exit from the room
  • Use a calm, measured tone of voice
  • Do not take anger personally
  • Listen actively
  • Know how to get help quickly
  • Report all incidents of violence, whether verbal or physical
