According to Mercer University in Georgia, the state will need approximately 80,000 nurses by 2020 to meet residents' healthcare needs, but current projections indicate that there will only be 48,000 practicing nurses in 15 years. To counter this shortage, Mercer University recently partnered with Piedmont Healthcare in Atlanta. One of the first activities planned is a program between the university's nursing school and Piedmont to recruit and train nurses to fill more positions at the hospital. The president of the university says that the nursing school also plans to add faculty and new nursing programs to increase the number of students it can enroll. Several other activities in development include sharing resources and costs, hosting community fairs to promote healthcare careers, establishing an annual nursing research conference, and offering more nonclinical programs at Mercer, including health management and health law.
