Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH has developed an educational program to support clinical nurse managers. During a middle-management forum, nurse managers expressed the need for more education on budgeting, managing, human resource issues, and mentoring staff. As a result of these concerns, leaders at the facility developed a nine-month leadership course. Participants attend monthly evening sessions that cover the topics they considered most important to their performance. Prior to this training, each manager handled situations, such as staff absenteeism, differently. After the training, they dealt with managerial issues similarly, resulting in greater staff satisfaction.
