With the national push for improved patient safety via electronic medical records, informatics education is expected to be a top priority for staff educators. Some groups, such as the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), are focusing their efforts on informatics education and training for healthcare professionals. For instance, AMIA recently released its 10x10 program, an informatics education and training program aimed at teaching 10,000 healthcare professionals by the year 2010. The program will train healthcare professionals-as well as professionals working in public health and translational bioinformatics-about topics such as personal health records, the exchange of health information, and healthcare quality and error prevention. Following the program, participants are expected to master a set of core competencies developed by AMIA.
