An infant is born through normal vaginal delivery and has a normal Apgar score at birth, and again five minutes after birth.
Question: How is this birth coded on the infant's medical record?
Answer: The birth is coded V30.00 (Single live born, without mention of cesarean section, born in the hospital) with the fourth and fifth digits recording the type of delivery and where the birth took place. As a coder, be certain that you do not use the codes that indicate the mother's delivery.
Editor's note: The above excerpt is from the new online course, "Inpatient coding module: Pediatric and newborns." For more information on this and other courses in our Coding library, go to www.hcprofessor.com and click on Coding and Reimbursement.
