Designation: A higher level of education?

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 10, 2005

This week, a reader wants to know whether the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) Commission requires organizations to have a minimum percentage of BSN-prepared staff. Read the response below from our expert, Suzanne C. Beyea, RN, PhD, FAAN, director of nursing research at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.

Q: We are considering designation. Is there a minimum percentage of the nursing staff who must be BSN-prepared?

A: At present, the MRP Commission does not require a minimum percentage of RNs prepared at the BSN level, but a healthcare organization should anticipate that the reviewers would expect to see a commitment toward higher education in nursing. This could be evidenced by tuition reimbursement, career counseling, and support from leadership for advanced education. Any nursing organization should be willing and able to provide evidence that nurses are supported across the trajectory of career development.
