Be sure data-collection processes are up-to-snuff
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 10, 2005
Some nursing professionals think that their data collection processes are in line with the requirements for ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation, but a closer look may unveil discrepancies. For example, the ANCC requires hospitals to collect and report data at the unit level and include staff nurses in the data's evaluation process. However, Barbara O'Brien, RN, MSN, Cert., president, Magnetic HealthCare Strategies, LLC, in Manchester, NJ, says that many hospitals measure data on a divisional level.
Another snag for organizations is the length of time they collect data. For instance, organizations have to submit two years' worth of nurse satisfaction data. Although most hospitals have patient satisfaction questionnaires in place, many don't have satisfaction surveys for nurses. If these circumstances sound familiar to you, crafting a timeline at the start of your journey will help you estimate how long it will take to collect data to meet the ANCC's expectations.
