Weekly Q&A: Avoid alienating nonnursing staff on the journey

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 24, 2005

This week, a reader wants to know how to create an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) culture without alienating nonnursing departments. Read the response below from our expert, Janet Cahill, RN, BSN, MBA, director of professional practice and development and MRP coordinator at Northwest Memorial Hospital (NMH) in Chicago.

Q: I am a project coordinator. How can I create an MRP culture without alienating nonnursing departments?

A: As nurses, we understand that the MRP process focuses on excellence in nursing and the delivery of patient care. However, as a project coordinator, you need to engage all employees in the process. Nursing does not operate in a silo and our philosophy at NMH is that you either provide care or support someone who does. We open our MRP events to all employees and share examples of how nonnursing departments help nurses to perform their jobs. When we held the first organizational MRP kick-off event, I actively recruited nonnursing employees to serve on the different designation committees.

You can also recognize nonnursing departments for their contributions to nursing through a more formal process. The nursing department at NMH established a Partners in Caring Award to achieve this end. This year, our nursing staff recognized the Information Systems department.
