Leadership support critical to designation

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 31, 2005

To successfully complete the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® process, nurse leaders must ensure that their organizations promote an atmosphere where professional nurses thrive. If you are not meeting the first three Forces of Magnetism--quality of nursing leadership, organizational structure, and management style--it's not possible to meet the other 11 forces, says Barbara L. O'Brien, RN, MSN, Cert., President, Magnetic HealthCare Strategies, LLC in Manchester, NJ. To promote a professional environment for staff nurses, one in which nurse leaders support staff's efforts to provide excellent patient care, leaders need to be visionary, forward-moving, and in touch with staff. These qualities not only mold good leaders, they are essential to comply with the program's 14 Forces of Magnetism.
