Weekly Q&A: If you achieved designation, do you need the JCAHO?

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 21, 2005

This week, a reader asks whether ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) status replaces the need for compliance with other regulatory agencies. Read the response below from one of our advisors, Marian C. Turkel, RN, PhD, MRP project consultant, Chicago, IL.

Q: Were any designated facilities able to drop other regulatory agency requirements? In other words, does designation eliminate the need for JCAHO surveys?

The intent of the Magnet Recognition Program is to recognize excellence in nursing practice and quality patient care. It was never intended to become a substitute for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) accreditation survey, and I am not aware of any organizations that have thought about doing this. However, the JCAHO acknowledges the value of designation in resolving the nursing crisis and ensuring high standards for patient safety and quality of care.

Facilities that have achieved designation may find the designation beneficial when an unannounced JCAHO survey takes place. That facility will have policies and procedures that are organized, current, relevant, and evidence-based. Also, engaging in dialogue with MRP appraisers increases the confidence of staff nurses when communicating with JCAHO surveyors, and quality improvement projects will be staff-nurse driven.
