Staff empowerment correlates to patient safety
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, July 12, 2005
Creating an environment that brings nurses to the forefront of care helps build a safety net for patients. At Medical City Hospital in Dallas, nursing leadership supports a practice model that ensures nurses practice to the fullest extent of their licensure, explains Cole Edmonson, MS, RN, CHE, CNAA, BC, associate administrator for patient care services at Medical City. Doing so encourages nurses to think critically about medical and nursing orders, make recommendations for the medical care plan, and offer advice about the best way to care for a patient. The hospital provides regular education for nurses, emphasizing that policies and practices are evidence-based. Knowing that the practices they suggest are supported by evidence makes nurses confident to recommend a practice to physicians.
