Don't waste time: Form your steering committee now

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, July 19, 2005

As soon as an organization starts exploring ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) status, they should implement a steering committee to oversee the process, according to Marian C. Turkel RN, PhD, independent MRP consultant in Chicago. It's important for the facility's chief nursing executive and project consultant (if applicable) to be active members, and to involve representatives from nonnursing leadership, such as the vice president (VP) of medical affairs and the VPs of human resources, marketing, quality, etc. Representatives from all levels of nursing should also serve on the committee, including direct-care RNs and advanced practice nurses. This type of comprehensive support promotes an interdisciplinary approach to designation. Some responsibilities of the steering committee include

  • assisting with the gap analysis
  • securing organizational support and resources
  • assigning expectations to other committees
  • communicating with organizational leadership and medical staff
