GA program trains LPNs to become RNs, helps ease nurse shortage

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, July 19, 2005

Experts project Georgia's RN vacancy rate to increase from 15% to 40% by 2020, according to GeorgiaTrend Magazine. To boost the number of RNs in the state's private healthcare facilities, the University System of Georgia developed a part-time training program for LPNs to earn licensure as RNs. For example, approximately 40 LPNs at Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton will earn registered nursing degrees from Dalton State College. The first group of students start classes this fall and graduate in December 2006. The program will not only advance staff's clinical skills, but could also help meet several criteria under the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® 14 Forces of Magnetism (14 standards), one of which is professional development. The organization is currently pursuing designation.
