Edward Hospital achieves designation, enhances environment for RNs

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, July 26, 2005

Edward Hospital in Naperville, IL, received ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® status, marking the culmination of a three-year effort. According to hospital officials, teams of nurses gathered evidence to demonstrate how the 14 Forces of Magnetism were operationalized throughout the organization during the hospital's journey. If these teams discovered areas for improvement, they made adjustments accordingly. For instance, they added nurse educators to the obstetrics, medical-surgical, surgical, and cardiac units as an additional career path for nurses. They also initiated a new shared leadership structure that includes hospitalwide councils and unit-based councils, giving RNs the opportunity to refine policies on quality care, professional development, and nursing practice. Another result of the teams' work was implementing onsite classes to help nurses prepare for their specialty certification exam. Edward Hospital is the first designated hospital in DuPage County, and employs approximately 1,100 nurses.
