Weekly Q&A: Research resources

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 2, 2005

Nurses cite numerous barriers to participating in, using, or conducting research, including limited access to current literature, difficulty interpreting research, and a lack of time or incentives to participate. But these barriers are rapidly dwindling by the use of technology to access information. Information access is at an all-time high in the nation's hospitals through the Internet, intranet, and print publications. Consider using the following

  • current nursing text on units
  • nursing journal clubs
  • organizational standards or policies
  • advanced practice nurses
  • online resources (e.g., Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Micro MedX)

Additionally, research indicates that an individual's education level relates to his or her use of research in decision-making. The more advanced education nurses pursue, the more likely they are to understand and use research as a foundation for clinical decisions.
