Three ways to keep your application interesting

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 2, 2005

It's possible for your written ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® application to literally be thousands of pages long. Barbara Wadsworth, RN, MSN, MBA, CNAA, BC, Administrative Nurse Director, Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, PA, submitted five binders containing approximately 3,000 pages of documentation when her facility applied for the designation. She offers the following suggestions to keep your appraisers engaged while they review your documents:

1. Tell stories. Share examples of unique staff doing unique things that contribute to your organization's culture.

2. Use color. Incorporate pictures and colored paper to keep the look of your stories just as vibrant and engaging as the content.

3. Be clear. If you are writing the narratives, be sure to have an editor--whether it's a colleague or an outside reviewer--read through the narratives for clarity and consistency.
