Support nurses from the top down
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 2, 2005
It's difficult to achieve ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® status and respect nursing values if they are not embraced from the top down, says Katherine Riley, RN, BSN, Assistant Vice President, Operations, Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) in Bennington. Designation recognizes the entire organization for creating a safer culture focused on providing optimal patient care. "The culture and philosophy that support a designated organization have to start at the top, with the board," she says. "Nursing cannot accomplish this unless the whole organization is involved."
The CNO at SVMC sits at the board level with the chief executive officer and other vice presidents, says Riley. She also participates in the committees that make decisions relevant to patient care, including the budget committee.
