Weekly Q&A: Gear up for redesignation

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 9, 2005

This week, a reader wants to know how to engage staff in ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® redesignation. Read the response below from our advisor, Elise Gropper, PhD, APRN, CPHQ, CNAA, BC, president of Gropper & Associates, Inc., a consulting firm in Coral Springs, FL.

Q: What are the various approaches, from an organizational perspective, to successfully revive staff in the redesignation process?

Organizations often lose steam one year after designation and tend to begin the "gear up" phase one year prior to redesignation. Sustaining the culture is often more challenging than originally obtaining it. After all the fanfare and excitement ceases, the only way to keep the culture alive is for staff to truly internalize it. A wonderful book that speaks to this journey is Fish! Sticks by Ludin, Christensen, and Paul, published in 2003 by Hyperion Books. Staff need to internalize the philosophy by internalizing the mission and vision, speaking about its personal meaning frequently, living it in interactions with patients and colleagues, and coaching each other to fulfill the mission and vision each and every day. Other books that can be beneficial as you begin this journey are Fish! and Fish Tales! by the same authors.
