Editor's note: Codes are indicated below in parentheses.
Bronchopneumonia (485) can involve more than one of the lobes in the lungs and is frequently seen in the elderly or in infants because both may have inadequate immunity or decreased resistance to infections. It is sometimes a complication of bronchitis (490) as it moves from the bronchial tree further into the lobes of the lungs.
Use pneumonia (486) (organism unspecified) when the cause of pneumonia is not identified, and if the physician does not provide further clarification.
Editor's note: The above excerpt is from the new online course, "Inpatient coding module: Respiratory diseases and illnesses." For more information on this and other courses in our Coding library, go to www.hcprofessor.com and click on Coding and Reimbursement.
