Help! We need exam-scoring program recommendations

Trainers, can you recommend cost-effective scanning software/hardware that will scan printed learner evaluations and score printed exams for educational books and other programs?
We have looked at Scantron products for this, but it seems cost prohibitive and doesn't quite do what we're looking for. We currently manually score exams and enter evaluation data to analyze it.
