According to the American Hospital Association, approximately 1,200 of the nation's hospitals currently have hospitalist programs in place. In an effort to clearly define the skills and education needed by physicians practicing as hospitalists, the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) is working with industry experts to formalize the profession's core curriculum and competencies. SHM members reviewed the proposed hospitalist curriculum and competencies-the base for hospitalist education and training-and expect it to publish in 2006. By formally defining the core curriculum and competencies of hospitalists, SHM hopes to give guidance to organizations seeking to effectively educate practicing hospitalists and to create a hospitalist track for medical residents.
