New classes in practical nursing commenced this week after Hamilton College in Des Moines, IA, implemented a licensed-practical-nurse program for direct-care providers at four of its campuses. Hamilton College worked with the Iowa State Board of Nursing to develop content consistent with the state's requirements, including general education courses and core nursing courses. Students attend daytime classes for a year and also complete 270 clinical hours in long-term care facilities, hospitals, and local clinics. Each campus added specialized lab facilities to create a realistic practice environment for students, and each campus accommodates 50-125 nursing students per year. If students successfully complete the program, they are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses.
