Recent studies say near-term infants are at greater risk for potentially serious health problems, including respiratory distress syndrome, temperature instability, apnea, sepsis, hypoglycemia, hyperbilirubinemia and feeding problems. To address this critical healthcare issue, the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) recently announced a multi-year initiative to educate healthcare practitioners and parents about near-term infants and improve healthcare practice for this vulnerable population. Specifically, it will:
- Create an assessment tool for nurses to use in caring for near-term infants;
- Raise awareness among healthcare providers of the risks associated with near-term birth;
- Provide resources for consumer awareness and advocacy; and
- Educate parents and families on the care of near-term infants.
AWHONN will release a conceptual framework for the initiative this fall. The framework will be published in the November/December issue of the association's clinical journal, the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing (JOGNN).
