Weekly Q&A: What does designation mean to the LTC world?

This week, a reader asks if the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® requirements for hospitals also apply to long-term care (LTC) facilities. Q: Are the requirements to achieve designation the same for acute care and LTC settings? What are some of the benefits for LTC facilities if they achieve designation?


A:  Facilities use the same application manual (ANCC 2005 edition) whether the organization is a hospital, long-term care facility, home care agency, or any other healthcare organization. The requirements are essentially the same. However, the focus would be different across applicant organizations to reflect the unique services that they provide. The benefits of designation for an LTC facility are the same as those of hospitals in regard to marketing the status to the public and healthcare professionals. Whether or not an organization is interested in officially seeking designation, the Forces of Magnetism and required sources of evidence are excellent tools for supporting or developing a professional nursing model in any organization.
