Create a committee structure unique to your organization

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 8, 2005

ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) coordinators from facilities big and small can attest to the rigor and complexity of the designationprocess. Many have found the key to maximizing their designation efforts is to build a committee framework that reflects their unique culture.

At Northwest Memorial Hospital (NMH) in Chicago, a 700-bed facility currently seeking designation, employees are driven to meet high expectations related to practice and care, according to Janet Cahill, RN, BSN, MBA, director, professional practice and development and MRP coordinator. As a result, administrators invited hospital executives and other members of leadership to set the pace for a steering committee and three subcommittees.  The steering committee meets monthly to oversee the progress of the three subcommittees. It is composed of the vice president (VP) of human resources; the senior VP of medical affairs; the VP of marketing; the VP of quality; the VP of women's health, and the VP of operations and support services.

Additionally, an advanced practice nurse, two staff RNs, Cahill, and Marian Turkel, RN, PhD, MRP project consultant, serve as steering committee members. Cahill explains that having this comprehensive support in the steering committee benefits NMH because it promotes an interdisciplinary approach to designation and sets the tone of excellence for the subcommittees to follow.
