This week, a reader wants to know how to motivate her staff to participate in professional nursing organizations. Read the advice below from our expert, Elise Gropper, PhD, APRN, CPHQ, CNAA, BC, president of Gropper & Associates, Inc., a consulting firm in Coral Springs, FL. Question: Do you have any tips on how I can motivate my staff nurses to get involved in professional nursing associations (to comply with Force #10, Community and the hospital)? Answer: Encouraging staff to become involved in professional nursing organizations is often a challenge. Staff need to understand how these organizations will benefit them. We all lead busy lives and we need to know that our additional commitments are beneficial. Begin by bringing information from recent local, state, and national meetings, or from these organizations' newsletters to staff meetings for discussion. You could also invite a member of your state nursing association to speak to staff about a topic of interest. The best way to foster interest is through exposure.
