St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua, NH, is the first community hospital in the state to earn ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® status for nursing excellence. After three years of preparation and a three-day site visit from ANCC appraisers, St. Joseph's became the second hospital statewide to receive the honor. A hospital official says that the designation reflects a positive work environment for nurses and excellent patient care. She says she hopes that this atmosphere will attract nurses, physicians, and patients. The hospital currently employees 306 nurses, the majority of whom work part-time. The nursing turnover rate at St. Joseph's is 6% and the vacancy rate is 2%. The facility does not use agency staff.
