A multi-tiered management-training program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), a 20-hospital system in Pittsburgh, prepares prospective managers and senior executives to be effective leaders. Level-one and level-two participants (staff with leadership potential and frontline managers selected by UPMC) complete a mandatory six-month project for the organization with the help of a mentor, and level-three participants (new senior leaders) go through a two-week, intensive training program and a yearlong project and mentorship. For example, established managers (level-two participants) complete a hospitalwide project, and level-three participants complete a systemwide project. According to UPMC officials, the program not only enhances the skills of current managers but also identifies and educates new leaders outside the managerial group. UPMC attributes their ability to maintain employee satisfaction and retain both managers and staff to the five-year-old training program.
