In wake of the vaccine shortage, New York healthcare providers fight the flu with education this season. For instance, Stony Brook University Hospital posted approximately 100 signs in the facility educating hospital staff and patients about the virus. Queens Center for Rehabilitation and Residential Healthcare also increases infection control (IC) practices through extra training sessions on transmission, and encourages sick workers to stay at home. Although the shortage is a challenge, hospital officials at Stony Brook say vaccination is only one way to prevent and manage flu transmission. The situation is an opportunity to educate staff and patients on the other vital IC methods, such as handwashing and avoiding contact with infected people.
