Florida-based Sarasota Memorial Hospital retrains its nursing and pharmacy staff after an unannounced state inspection last month uncovered numerous patient safety violations. The areas of deficiency include patient rights and care; anesthesia, nursing, and pharmaceutical services; quality improvement, and medical staff organization. Inspectors found violations such as unlocked/unattended medicine cabinets and carts; medicine carts with unlabeled pre-filled syringes, and nurses administering shots drawn by other nurses. Several well-publicized medical errors triggered the investigation and in response to the findings, Sarasota Memorial submitted a corrective action plan to the state to rectify its problems. As part of the plan, nurses and pharmacists underwent mandatory training last week on safe medication practices, medication security, and blood administration and documentation.
