Twenty-nine high school students interested in healthcare careers attended the second annual Health Academy at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in South Dakota to get a first-hand glimpse into the field. Students shadowed nurses, radiologists, therapists, and emergency department staff for a realistic view of healthcare professionals' responsibilities. During two sessions over a period of six days, students stayed at Presentation College and traveled to Avera St. Luke's to meet and observe staff. The students split into small groups where hospital employees gave them hands-on work and encouraged questions. Students, following a medical assistant, learned to take vitals, blood pressure, temperature, and even learned the value of keeping patient information confidential. The academy chose students through an application process including submission of a school transcript and short essay.
