In an effort to improve the immunization system in Africa, 33 healthcare professionals will participate in a 10-day training session at the Merck Vaccine Network-Africa (MVN-A) training center. The facility, funded by a grant from The Merck Company-a New Jersey-based pharmaceutical products company-opened its doors this week at Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya. The participants will learn how to safely store and handle vaccines, provide vaccination services, and carry out immunization surveillance and disease monitoring activities. The facility is also supported by the Kenya Ministry of Health, and center officials work closely with healthcare organizations across the Eldoret region to improve the quality of healthcare services. Center officials hope that the vaccination management education will increase the ability to provide vaccines to children and immunization coverage across the region and the country. Additional MVN-A training centers will soon be underway as a means of establishing a steady source of skilled healthcare workers across Africa.
