Question: A 28-year-old patient arrives at the ED requesting the removal of stitches. The patient reports no problems with his wound. A qualified ED staff member examines the wound and determines that it is not infected and is healing without difficulty.

What is the hospital's EMTALA obligation?

Answer: Under EMTALA, the ED can refer the patient to an outpatient clinic or other facility for removal of the stitches. The hospital's obligation ends when it determines that the patient is not experiencing an emergency medical condition. Thus, not all EMTALA screenings will be equally extensive.

Editor's note: The above case scenario is from the new online course, "Nursing CE Series: EMTALA Compliance for nurses and case managers." For more information on this and other courses in our Nursing library, go to www.hcprofessor.com and click on Nursing.
