Initiating an E-learning project can be overwhelming. Is it in line with the overall goals of your multi-facility healthcare system? Can it be customized to fit your system's different facilities? When you explore the world of online training as an individual or as part of a group you have to cover all of the bases. George Siemens has designed a resource that shows how aspects such as technology, learning theory, design, etc., work together to shape and impact E-learning. His model provides a holistic approach for people involved in planning, managing, and developing E-learning. The model is based on six "critical success factors" that Siemens finds vital to a comprehensive understanding of the field. Once you have a full understanding of E-learning, Siemens advises using that knowledge to make choices based on your organization's unique culture and needs.
Editor's note: The above excerpt is adapted from the article, "The Whole Picture of E-learning" by George Siemens, available at http://www.elearnspace.org/Articles/wholepicture.htm. George Siemens is an instructor at Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
