A 2000 Wyoming census revealed that roughly two in five single mothers live at or below the poverty level. In an effort to provide more employment opportunities, the state Department of Family Services, in collaboration with Cheyenne's United Medical Center and Our Families Our Future-a Cheyenne-based group that provides skills for young parents-will train young mothers in medical transcription. Specifically, participants will listen to doctors' audio taped notes about patients and document them for paper files. After participants complete the training, they will qualify for entry level positions, earning $11 to $15 an hour. With enough experience, transcription professionals can earn up to $50,000 a year. Program officials call the project unique because it offers counseling and life skills sessions in addition to career training.
