The U.S. Department of Labor awarded the Tacoma-Pierce County Workforce Development Council a $762,659 federal grant to train residents for healthcare careers. The Washington based council's grant proposal triumphed over 11 competitors for several reasons. One unique aspect targets minorities and adolescents for future job placement. Another element recruits retired and part-time nurses to educate novice caregivers. Council members will also use a portion of the grant money to increase nurses' salaries providing they teach at local colleges. According to The News Tribune, program officials are optimistic that participants will find work easily after completing the training. A survey released in March by the state Employment Security Department showed healthcare as one of the largest growing industries, with more than 5,700 openings statewide.
