In order to improve your staff's cultural competence, consider training with the same seriousness as you do with essential clinical skills. Many healthcare providers have developed successful and creative education programs to address the needs of culturally diverse communities. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) recognized several of these programs in their publication, Cultural Competence Works. Below are some of the featured techniques that you can use at your facility to build a comprehensive and effective training structure.
Develop annual cultural competence training sessions for all staff members as part of job descriptions and employee performance measures.
Invite staff to participate in an annual strategic planning sessions to review and revise operations to meet the needs of the community.
Create training curricula that can be customized to the issues of specific cultures and communities.
Make more professional training accessible for interpretive staff, such as a two-day training session.
