The American Red Cross has created the Family Caregiving program in an effort to train and support millions of Americans responsible for caring for sick or injured family members. For aging baby boomers, illnesses once considered terminal are now chronic--causing an increase in the need for caregivers. According to the National Alliance for Caregiving, over 22 million caregivers work in the healthcare field, and 60 percent of those work outside the home. The program covers nine key issues for caregivers to learn how to care for loved ones, including general skills, home safety, and lifting/moving patients. Red Cross members teach these topics in hour-long training sessions promoting an atmosphere of guidance and support. Participants receive a certificate and information booklet for every session they complete.
