Government funds education program in Texas Panhandle
West Texas (WT) A&M University's Division of Nursing and Texas Tech University's Health Sciences Center have teamed up to deliver healthcare information to students in 20 counties in the Panhandle-where there is a critical need for healthcare services. The federally-funded, Area Health Education Center (AHEC) program, teaches students about opportunities in the healthcare industry in an effort to recruit and retain future healthcare providers. AHEC also offers a variety of continuing education classes. Texas Tech and WT plan to set up five AHECs in the rural West Texas area. Since the first AHEC in Plainview opened in June 2002, over 7,000 students have participated.
