Next fall, Vermont Technical College will run the only respiratory therapy program offered statewide. Champlain College decided to cut the program as a result of decreased enrollment, but this shortage in the number of respiratory therapists is exactly why Vermont Tech chose to incorporate it into their system. According to the Vermont Health Workforce Assessment Pilot Study, there was an18% vacancy rate for respiratory therapists in 2003. Almost 80% of Fletcher Allen's respiratory therapists are Champlain graduates, and five of the 56 positions are currently open. The program will be maintained through a partnership with Fletcher Allen Health Care and Rutland Regional Medical Center, where students receive their clinical training. They will learn how to test breathing capacity, teach breathing exercises, hook patients to ventilators and administer inhaled medicine. Vermont Tech plans for 15 students to enroll in the first year of the program.
