Advocate Health Care and its affiliation, the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing (UIC CON), received a $1.6 million grant to research and employ methods to increase recruitment and retention among nurses. The purpose of the program is to improve patient care, cultural competency, and cost-effectiveness through the enhancement of nursing retention. Three hospitals in the Advocate system will participate based on their commitment to staffing diversity. Some of the key elements of the plan include implementing an activity-based management and training program for nurse managers and their staff, and providing access to UIC programs that target opportunities for managerial and executive leadership development. The grant commenced in September 2003 and will be allocated over a five-year period by the Nurse Reinvestment Act through the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). According to the Yearbook of Experts, Authorities and Spokespersons, Advocate is the largest healthcare provider in Illinois (IL) and UIC CON is the largest institute of nursing leadership for IL, ranking consistently among the top 10 colleges of nursing in the country.
